Joseph Fletcher wrote his book in 1966 at the height of hippy culture, the anti-Vietnam War movement and the rise of feminism. The major theme is that agape love is all you need – but remember, agape is the heights for the four loves of Greek ethics, as it means sacrificial love for strangers and friends. It was seen at the time as a Christian answer to “man come of age” as the liberal Bishop John Robinson called it.
