Environmental Ethics

The fundamental question in environmental ethics is this: Can we accord the environment some status of intrinsic goodness, and how? Can we argue that the environment is good in itself? Gaia theory (James Lovelock) and the eco-holist movements of Aldo Leopold are two ways to construct such an ethical view. Utilitarians are instrumentalists on the environment (it is a means to the end of human happiness, and if you are Singer, includes some view of animal welfare as well) Of course, the doesn’t stop you begin a utilitarian environmentalist.
